Landmark of the country – Mekenes
A place of interest in Morocco is Mekenes. It is located on the north of the Atlas Mountains. Mekenes was founded in the 11th century. Already at the end of the 17th century, the city became the capital of the country, and the sultan Mula Ismail made it his residence. The old part of Mekenes, the medina, contains the Bab Mansur gate and is protected by a 10-kilometer wall. In this part of the city, European and Islamic traditions are peculiarly combined.
On the medina is one of the main square of El Hdim, which is also considered a landmark of Morocco. It has entertainment facilities for tourists: various cafes, fakirs also organize performances, musicians, snake charmers. Sultanov Palace, which is located near the square is also considered a landmark of Morocco.
The idea of its construction was conceived by Sultan Mula Ishmael, who wanted to build something more grandiose than Versailles. The palace area contains more than 20 pavilions and two mosques. An interesting attraction of the city of Morocco is Mekenes Museum of Moroccan Art. Here are metal artifacts, wooden sculptures, leather items, multi-colored embroidery.
Volubilis – landmark of Morocco
The landmark of Morocco, which can be reached from Mekenes, is Volubilis. This is an abandoned area, which was inhabited by people during the existence of the Neolithic. Volubilis famous triumphal arch, which is decorated with columns brought from Italy, was built by Marcus Aurelius Sebastian back in 217. There is also another landmark of Morocco – the Basilica, where storks now build their nests. And before that it was a meeting place for the rulers. Despite the many events and natural disasters that occurred in different years for almost two thousand years, many Roman mosaics on the walls of Volubilis are well preserved to this day.
Here are depicted, or rather lined with mosaics, bathing nymphs, medallions with 12 feats of Hercules, Bacchus on the chariot, and many others. For tourists, the ruins of Volubilis may be interesting in historical and cultural terms. This landmark of Morocco is considered the main place that must be visited by every tourist.
