Sights of Georgia

Georgia is a country of mountains and the sun, beautiful wine and hospitable people. In Georgian, the name of the country Georgia sounds like Sakartvelo and this country has something to be proud of. After all, there are a lot of sights in it. These include not only architecture, but also natural monuments, and the mentality and originality of Georgians themselves can also be called a landmark.

Vardzia – the history of Georgia
The cave monastery complex Vardzia is a famous historical monument and landmark in Georgia. It was built in the 12th century in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. The complex consists of more than 600 rooms. There are chapels, churches, and even refectory, libraries and baths. All this rises above the left bank of the Mtkvari River. Originally, the landmark of Georgia Vardzio was founded as a fortress to defend against invaders. There were more than 3,000 large caves, but today only a small part of the majesty of the complex remains, this is only a third, but it still amazes and pleases tourists.

The center of this landmark in Georgia can be called a temple, carved into the rocks. Here on the walls inside the temple are depicted the saints, as well as the great rulers of Georgia: Queen Tamara, her father George the Third. The length of the complex stretches for 900 meters, and the depth of the building goes 50 meters. In height, most of them reach about 40 meters. Vardzia can accommodate more than 50 thousand people.

Mtskheta – the ancient capital of Georgia
Another important attraction is the ancient capital of Georgia – the town of Mtskheta. At the entrance to the city, you can immediately observe a wonderful panorama: on one side there is a forest and mountains, and on the other, buildings and temples, for example, such as: Javari and Svetistskhoveli. The first temple of Georgia – Svetitskhovelli is the main sacred place of the country, and its name translates as “Life-giving pillar”.

The temple was built in 1010 and is still in the form it was a thousand years ago. Here once was the tomb of the kings and the approximate nobility of Georgia, there are still tombstones here. As for the other sights of Georgia – the Javari temple, which is also called the Cathedral of the Holy Crest, it stands on a high mountain, from where a panorama of two majestic rivers opens, which merge into one, and the names of them are Mtkvari and Aragva.

Attraction Uplistsikhe – cave cities of Georgia
Another famous landmark of Georgia is the rock with man-made caves called the city Uplistsikhe. It is located near the town of Gori. You can get here by climbing the long tunnel that leads up.

Once it was a secret passage from the fortress city to the river. The history of Uplistsikhe began in the second millennium BC. Then the first cave cities were made. Here people changed, faith changed, but the name remained the same. From Georgian, the name of this attraction is translated as the fortress of God. About 150 caves have reached our days, and once there were more than 700 …

Alaverdi – the pride of Georgia
The sights of Georgia are the whole cities and individual streets, but mostly they are temples and churches, architectural creations. Judging by all this, it can be said that religion has long been highly valued here and in most of the country believers inhabited the country.

Alaverdi Cathedral is considered the holy shrine of Kakheti and the main attraction of the country. It was built in the Middle Ages, namely at the beginning of the 11th century. It is also considered one of the tallest buildings of that era. Earlier on the site of the temple was a small church of St. George, and therefore the modern cathedral is sometimes called that way. For more than 10 centuries, the building was destroyed by invaders and, subsequently, restored. In addition to the cathedral itself, there is a bell tower, a summer palace, a refectory and a fence behind the fortress wall. Not far from the Cathedral of Alaverdi are the tombs of the kings.

Fortress Khertvisi – Landmark of Georgia

Khertvisi fortress can be attributed to the sights of Georgia. It is very ancient, as it already existed in the 10th century AD. It is located on a hill that can be called quite rocky and this is the historical region of Meskheti. The fortress hid in a narrow gorge where the rivers Mtkvari and Paravani merge. One part of it is called the Citadel, and the other is the Lower. The citadel is located at the head of the mountain, and the rest of it is adjacent to it from the east and south.

There are a lot of sights in Georgia, but no stories about them compare with the real opportunity to visit and see all this in person. But now you have the opportunity to see the best tourist places of Georgia in one photo album.
