Edinburgh Attractions

Edinburgh is the second most visited city in the UK. Every year more than 13 million tourists from all over the world come here. The convenient location of the city, rich history and cultural heritage are the main trump cards in attracting tourists. So let’s find out what places attracts so many people and what sights you need to look at the tour.

Edinburgh Castle – a symbol of the city
Edinburgh Castle – unquestioning tourist leader and the main attraction of the capital of Scotland. The legendary castle for the whole world is famous for its heroic past. The thick stone walls, surrounded by ancient volcanic rocks, keep the spirit of medieval battles and the glory of great victories since the 900s BC. er . Perhaps this is one of the few monuments of Edinburgh, without which it is impossible to imagine a country in its modern architectural appearance. Luxurious architectural forms of the castle are decorated with a shield of the Royal coat of arms and the Crown of Scotland.

The landmark is located on top of a volcanic mountain, which can be seen from all corners of Edinburgh. Historical summary states that the Castle played a key role in the formation of the state of Scotland. The main “snacks” for tourists are: a spectacular shooting ceremony from the cannon, a beautiful panoramic view, the inner chapel of St. Margaret, the “Stone of Destiny” and the majestic Great Hall.

Royal Mile – a place of bright sights

The Royal Mile is none other than the central historical street 2 km long. It connects two royal residences: Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Once the main thoroughfare of medieval Edinburgh, now represents one of the five narrow tourist streets that little resemble the “Royal Mile” of King David I (XII century).

Landmark Royal Botanical Garden of Edinburgh.
The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh (RBGE) began its operations in 1670 and is the second oldest garden in the UK after Oxford. A garden was designed for the cultivation of medicinal plants near the Palace of Holyrood, but during the following years the garden has grown into a real center for the study of biodiversity. The Royal Botanic Garden is an ideal landmark in Edinburgh for visits in the spring and summer, as well as the best remedy for the hustle and bustle of the city’s everyday work.

Fringe Festival – entertainment and recreation in Edinburgh
“Fringe” – the largest arts festival in the world! It is held annually in August and lasts 3 weeks. This is the best vacation spot for all lovers of music, drama, cinema, dance and comedy. Few people know that Fringe originates in 1947, when it was necessary to resume European cultural life after the devastation of the Second World War. Since there was no official program of speeches, everyone who took part took part and introduced something of their own to the general repertoire.

Every year the popularity of this festival has increased and very soon it became a real attraction of Edinburgh. It is interesting to know that in 2010 there was an absolute record of attendance and the scale of the celebrations. In total, 2453 shows were shown with 21,148 performers and 40,254 unique performances! At the same time, Fringe was visited by 2 million people!

Holyroodhouse Palace – Edinburgh Landmark
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British Queen in Scotland. It is located at the foot of the Royal Mile in front of the Scottish Parliament. Holyrood Abbey was founded by David I (King of Scotland) in 1128, and the palace itself was later built by James IV in 1501-1505. At the moment, the attraction of Edinburgh allows you to get acquainted in detail with the private apartments of the Scottish monarchy, as well as to look into the most dramatic period of time when Holyroodhouse was the site of murders and political intrigues associated with Queen Maria Stewart. Also, the palace is famous for its lush gardens and a small royal cafe. Real exhibits, personal belongings of monarchs, as well as thousands of years of treasure await all year round, except for the period of royal visits.

This ends the article, however, there is still the Edinburgh Photo Album at your disposal, which illustrates all the sights and complements the article with panoramic landscapes.
